Pick a balanced party.
Pick two melee types.
Warriors start out with 1 battle axe, 1 chainmail
Rangers start out with a bow and leather tunic. IMPORTANT: They won't fight unless you give them a weapon!! They'll just shoot arrows.
Rogues start off with a dagger and leather tunic.
Pick 3 of the other classes. I suggest 2 healers and a magus.
Go to Combat Settings and stick them in the back row for Party Position.
I suggest you go into Combat Settings and deleting all of the Magic Use in Combat defaults.
Waste of MP. Put in Heal, Priority of 100 for Healers.
For Magus, put in the offensive spell that they know (acid bolt, fire bolt, ice bolt..you get it now).
Magus needs reagents for casting and will STOP CASTING if they run out of them.
Don't be tempted to use the Healers Holy Wrath/Mass Holy Wrath spells.
Healers are for buffing stats before fights and healing. Besides you want your warriors to get hit so they go up levels, melee defense, shield, ranged, and magic defense.
If you want to do magic damage get as a 6th Party member another Magus. They have cheaper MP damage spells.
Now that you have a party.
Hit Location Commands.
You'll see the cost per square to Travel and what can be done in that square.
Click on a square to travel to it. You can scout ahead by looking at the squares and see what types of monsters/partys are there.
When you enter a square with hostile monsters, combat will start automatically.
Combat rounds are:
1. Your Magic Phase
2. Monsters Magic Phase
3.Your Ranged (bow,sling, etc.) Phase
4. Monsters Ranged Phase
5. Your Melee Weapon Phase (only those in front can attack with weapons)
6. Monsters Melee Phase
And the melee phases keep going until the monsters die/retreat or you die/retreat.
Fight a few battles and hit Train to see if you gain any skills. As you get higher skills, wait longer to use theTrain option or you won't get any gains or minimal gains.
As you kill monsters you'll get items that you can give to party members like better bows, weapons, armor and magical items. Magic items need to be Identified using the spell Identify (magus learns this using an Identify scroll), some other party that you can transfer the item to identify it for you or certain places on the map can identify for money and AP.
